Mmm Bop

19 Dec

cover-bop-OCT_kb3_wBubbles

There’s nothing cuter than when my daughter finds her subscription to Bop or Tiger Beat magazine in the mail. She snaps it up and quickly sneaks off to some quite corner in the house so she can read her favorite section, “OMG, I’m So Embarrassed,” or something like that. And there’s nothing like leaving it to this iconic publication to teach my kid about menstrual cycles either. “What’s a tamp-in?” she asked me last year…when she was 9. That was AWESOME.

Considering all the media exposure kids are bombarded with, I really have no problem with my two reading these publications. They’re actually one of the few things they do read that’s not on an iPad or computer. The content is completely harmless, and honestly, it keeps me in the loop on whether Selena and Justin will ever get back together and Ariana Grande’s wardrobe of crop tops and mini skirts.

And if I really must divulge, it afforded me one of my first jobs out of college. I was a staff writer for a couple years at the teeny bopper publications. It was right in the midst of  pervy Lou Pearlman’s heyday. I recently found these pics and started feeling very old.

My Hair Serum Soothed My Dry Skin

12 Dec

itchy-skin

Considering it’s 9 degrees in Chicago, I have no right complaining about the chilly weather Los Angeles has been experiencing. But I am. A nighttime low of 42 degrees is still pretty damn frigid, especially when you’re “heavy” jacket is 10 years old and somewhere in the back of your closet ashamed to show itself from years of neglect.

But aside from having to deal with my supercharged metabolism (I can’t stop eating!), I’m at war with my skin. Its gone completely berserk. I’m itchy, flaky, dry and I’ve got this uninvited red bumpy rash thing happening on my upper chest. I’ve been lacquering myself with Curel, but my pores just suck it up like thirsty wolves wanting more and more.

In a desperate attempt to soothe my skin, I reached for my Silktage hair serum. Not to sound like an infomercial, but since it’s been good to my hair, I was hoping it would put the rest of me at ease. I was over this discomfort and ready to deal with the greasy consequences. Surprisingly, there weren’t any.

Silktage is an exotic blend of organic botanical oils including Camellia, Argan, and Monoi (from Tahitian gardenias) along with the essence of Geranium, Rosemary and wild harvested Palmarosa essentials oils. Doesn’t that sound delish? There are no chemicals or preservatives. Silktage has an intoxicating earthy fragrance from the combination of all the organic oils. It reminds me of a scent you’d experience walking into a spa. I love it and find it very calming. My skin has also found it calming and has pretty much transformed back to its supple, soft self and I am itchy no more. It’s also softened my cuticles and given my nail beds a slight sheen. Happy me.

Once the weather heats back up, I’m going to try adding a few drops of Silktage into my body moisturizer for a little extra love and that intoxicating scent.

The Beauty of Doing Good

11 Dec

groupshotWhen I’m not shuttling my kids to school, gymnastics, karate, play practice, basketball, piano, play dates, tutoring, or trying to relearn fifth grade math and keep them from going hungry, I work. You know, cause I have so much free time. I run Charmed PR, a small boutique agency that promotes a handful of fashion and beauty companies to the media. One of my beauty client’s, Shea Yeleen, was recently featured in a handful of “Gifts That Give Back” stories including Mashable and MSN’s Glo so I thought I’d share and expand a bit on their incredible product line.

Shea Yeleen natural skin care products, which include body butters, soaps, body balms and lip balms, use pure, unrefined shea butter sourced fairly and ethically from women-owned cooperatives in sub-Saharan Africa. The social enterprise was founded by Rahama Wright, a first generation Ghanian-American, during her service in the Peace Corps. What Wright has created is nothing short of a miracle: She organized and trained women in the villages of Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Mali to produce high quality natural shea butter which is used as the main component in Shea Yeleen’s decadent body care line made available for sale to the western world. These sales go back to the village women in the shea butter cooperatives and provide them with fair wages, so they can pay for health care, send their children to school, and improve their communities.

Today, Shea Yeleen’s products are available online as well as in select Whole Foods Stores. If you’re struggling with what to buy those friends and relatives who have everything this holiday season, treat them with some gorgeous gifts from Shea Yeleen. Your gift will be twofold.
